Bambi, I can assure you that you won't shock your system by eating a paleo diet. Let me offer the following to help demystify it. Have you ever eaten eggs & bacon maybe with a piece of fruit for breakfast? A salad w/ grilled chicken for lunch? Steak w/ sautee'd veggies for dinner? Put those all together and you've had a paleo day of eating. And you probably felt pretty good after eating those meals.
You body will thank you for cutting out all the gut irritating grains, legumes, processed food. As far as Zone vs Paleo....Atkins or whatever else.... Our western diet includes too many carbs, grains, highly processed foods, food preserved in sugar, foods made in a laboratory, etc... The Zone works because its low carb and doesnt allow you to eat the junk above. On top of that it is caloric restrictive and gives you a good balance of protein, carbs, & fat. You will lean out. The way Dr. Sears intended the zone diet to applied was with quality (paleo) foods. So in my opinion there is no zone vs paleo debate. Rather, do you want to weigh and measure (WAM) quality foods or just eat quality foods.
Sears says that the Zone on garbage is still better than not doing it at all. So for someone who refuses to change, has no self control, or resolve....he can work with you (eat half the bun on their big mac and only 5 french fries). Sounds like bs right? Well I know crossfitters, and they are not like that. Instead they are determined, dedicated, and work hard. They want the best quality fitness program, so why not take care of yourself and fuel your workouts with a quality diet.
Just want to say I am loving all of the nutrition talk. I have been looking to better my diet for a while. My problem is the planning meals and actually going to the grocery store. Everything for my family is, "what are we eating now?" which turns into a lot of ordering out and eating poorly. I do have a great influence in my father who is a big nutrition guy and spends hours researching and learning. He's a fan of the paleo. Twice a month he goes to a farm in PA and brings back RAW milk, butter, cheese, meat from grass fed free range cows, and eggs from free range chickens. The yolks are bright yellow! He keeps me stocked up on everything as well. I just have to plan out my meals, and I'd be ok. Also, Leanna I checked out that youtube video on the Paleo. It was awesome!!
Brett, thanks for your input! I am reading as I made a salad with chicken and veggies however I put a little feta on top and a little balsamic vin'ette. I am pretty sure that this is not paleo-like but feel as though I can't cut out dairy altogether. Also threw in some blueberries as they're not as high in sugar as cranberries or something like that. I'm getting the hang of it, I just need to plan ahead and have these things handy so that hunger doesn't creep up and suddenly I'm stuffing my face with anything and everything that i can get my hands on (cereal, breads, etc.) so I think that it's doable. Thanks again for the response. I have read and REALLY appreciate all the posts related to this topic! Thank you all!
Here's the deal with dairy and i'll quote robb wolf... Animals consume grains, the lectins of those grains get concentrated in the dairy. we consume that diary, so we have potential for gut irritation. Milk is also potent insulin stimulator. So theoreticaly you've got potential for systemic inflammation problems. So if you don't have any irritation from the dairy then I would say go ahead and enjoy yourself.
And if your a guy and you want to pack on some mass and you can handle dairy, the big insulin punch from dairy would be beneficial. Milk is growth food!
Hey Brett thanks for all the great imput. I have been having the zone/paleo debate going on. I don't think i would measure so i have ordered some Paleo books, the basic one and the Paleo for Athletes. Any feed back on either of these books? I also think shopping and planning the meals for the week is going to be key in staying consistent in any diet plan See everyone tonight at 530
Chris, I totally agree. And I'm sure something will come up eventually! Maybe start a petition or buy me a few pounds of beef jerky to bribe me... Meanwhile there are a lot of resources out there to make ya smarter on the subject. Start here http://robbwolf.com/?page_id=121 Wolf's FAQ has a TON of info and links to where to find this stuff.
I havn't been on the crossfit.com forums in a while, but they do have a nutrition board. Also, www.performancemenu.com has a paleo and zone forum you can read through.
Don't know about you, but anytime I've wanted to become knowledgeable on a subject I found it was best to go out and read as much as I could on it and ask questions of people who knew more than me. So if you want to learn about the zone, go buy Enter the Zone/ Mastering the Zone. (everybody already has CFJ issue 21 that tells you basically everything you need to put the zone in practice if you don't care about the science) If your interested in paleo...The Paleo Diet and thepaleodiet.com. So keep asking questions. But be sure to take an active role reading/learning as well.
Paul, you're right on about shopping and prep. You should definitely read the paleo book, its easy to get through. I have the athletes book on my book shelve, but have about 12 other things to read first. It's geared toward LSD runners. On wolf's FAQ page I just linked, he's got a link to a shopping guide he put together a while back. Check it out.
The following website gives a nice run down on Paleo

"A Week in the Zone" is an excellent guide you can take with you. I eat pretty clean, but still enjoy some "bad foods" here & there. I've kept 50lbs I packed on during my late teens off for almost 20 yrs. Despite the recent chest cold (was burning the candle at both ends & not resting...shame on me), I haven't been sick in 4 or 5 yrs. At age 40, I am in better shape now than my 20s & keeping looking to make improvements. I don't want to take pills or be limited in abilities as I get older.
I limit dairy as it's congestive & not good for my system (bad if you have allergies, inflammatory and or digestive issues). As Brett said, if it doesn't seem to affect you, enjoy it a bit.
If anyone is into shakes, try this site out. You can adjust according to your dietary preferences: http://www.precisionnutrition.com/super-shake-creation
We definitely are what we eat. Hope this helps someone :)
By the way, obviously this WOD had the "feel" of a mini-FGB ... I am predicting that a FULL-FGB is going to show its face in the near future ... just my take.
Tough workout.. RX'd 178 reps.. wasnt happy with my performance but then i realized it was my first lifting WOD since my arm injury.. Good job 5:30 class
Wow Michelle thanks for the website! Its great! I saw a receipe for a Paleo bar I might try. Only problem with the website you sent is I don't know what ingredients I can't use to keep it Paleo....I might need Brett's help here!
Bars are great for me since I'm on the road all day and need a good easy snack to eat while I'm driving.
Brett, If you have time can you check out the website and let me know what I could use to "make my bars"....thanks!
