Tactile = Sense of Touch...

Hey OTG'rs Let's talk Thoracic Mobility....

Some good 'ole fashion foundational info...
Our spine consists of several parts. Your lower back or lumbar spine counts 5 vertebrae (L1-L5). Each segment has about 2 degrees rotation which totals for 30° movement when turning. Your lumbar spine is designed for stability.  (The sacrum and coccyx are also a part of the lower back.)
Your cervical spine or neck counts 7 vertebrae (C1-C7). About 40° movement in rotation. Your thoracic spine or middle back (from the base of the neck to the bottom of the rib cage) counts 12 vertebrae (T1-T12). 70° movement when turning and is designed for mobility
[Portions above are compliments of http://stronglifts.com/how-to-improve-your-thoracic-mobility/]
Why do we need thoracic mobility?!
Do you slouch? Are you able to keep your chest up in the squat and deadlift?  Have you ever tweaked your back from just turning over in bed or turning around to look at something?  If your thoracic spine lacks mobility, it will stress your neck and lower back (lumbar) to take the load. These parts of the spine are not designed to withstand these larger loads through a high ROM.
We need to strengthen  this portion of our spine to  keep our body moving functionally, ie the way we're supposed to move w/o compromise.  This results in stronger squats, front squats, back squats, overhead squats, shoulder flexibility overhead, deadlifts, posture, etc...I could go on for days....and who doesn't want these!!  Let's take a more active role in doing some more mobility exercises for your thoracic spine, shouldersall the muscles associated w/ the scapula , hips, ankles, adductors, psoas, calves, piriformis, etc..
Here are a couple videos to help mobilize your thoracic spine!

Great morning at OTG this morning.

45 Ibs-12:14, still having a hard time getting the squat but it's a little better each time. Maybe snatches again next Monday for practice-who knows!

Have fun PM classes!

Theresa - You had 95, 125, 135! Own it!! And your welcome for the stretches and videos! The laughter and fun was an added plus!

Atlee - I'm workin' on it...

Wtown - Great Work Today!! A very humbling movement to say the least. If your snatch is good and your OHSQ is bad or vice versa - your toast!

This movement helps to identify weaknesses in pulling yourself under the bar into a full OHSQ too.

I was TIRED !!!

today was a day of firsts for me...first time doing bench press and first time doing squat snatches. as much as i despise pull ups really loved this wod!

Lift: 65-75-85. should have started at 75

WOD: 11:52 35lbs/gr and blue bands.
arms felt like jello during the ride home

nice work 4:30!

Fun today, 2 of my worst movements rolled into one! LOl. Justin thanks for the help and advice. Good call to RX the snatch at 95 and hold the squat. Snatch felt good, still need to work on getting lower with the OHSQ.
WOD
95 Snatch, no squat RX pull ups
9:48
Great work 5:30

way to go 6:30!

Rx'd 8:45. Was going to wait until tomorrow to do this because I had a b-ball game. Ended up doing it right after the game around 8PM.

The wod won on this one. Hope to do this one again though! Loved the movement!!

struggled with this WOD today, couldn't seem to catch any of the snatches balanced as I was falling forward the whole time...

11:25 RX'd, 1 second slower than my time from July, a bit frustrated about that

Lift 135 -185-205

Loved this WOD today, two of my better movements! However I am a total weakling when it comes to bench press.

Lift: 65/70/85(fail)/75

WOD:14:53 55lbs, blue and purple bands.

Considered RX'ing but still a little wobbly in OHSQ. and my lower back is really really tight. Pull ups seem to get better, the further into the WOD I am... Fun times! Great coaching Justin!

11:17 - WOD as Rx'd (Non-Heavy)

Lift: 185 - 205 - 225; gotta go heavier...

Great job 6:30pm; Thanks Justin, as always great Coaching... one of these days I plan to impress you with my snatch squat depth, DAMMIT!!! See you guys later this week.

WOD Rx'd - 11:00

Endurance WOD (Run)
2x of 200m - 400m - 800m
Rest time was the same as the interval
Time was not accurate so no reason to state it.

lift: 205 245 275
WOD: 13:09 having a bad OHSQ & a below average Snatch didn't help
